Course Description

Disability management is most effective when integrated and embedded into the strategies and culture of an organization. This course introduces an interdisciplinary approach to the concepts and practices of disability management, and addresses how to design, implement, and market an effective disability management program.

Course Details

Topics include: the importance of joint labour-management endorsement, a supportive infrastructure, the legal and ethical aspects, disability management practice standards, stakeholder roles and responsibilities, features of a gradual return-to-work program, program evaluation techniques, disability management best practices, prevention of workplace illness and injury, program marketing, role of an employee assistance program, and worker education and training.

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Define disability management
  • Identify the components of a disability management program
  • Utilize disability management information to analyze case studies
  • Analyze disability insurance plans and how they impact a disability management program
  • Demonstrate some basic disability management practices
  • Identify the impact that disability can have on the worker, employer and organization
  • Communicate the fundamentals of disability management to stakeholders
